PRINTERS

Many printers we find are not cost affective to repair, but not withstanding software issues, e.g. Windows and/or printer drivers; matters relating more specifically to ink perhaps, while we do not specialise in the repair of printers, we will do our best to advise or help.

For the more expensive ink-jet and laser units you might conceivably contact a specialist or the manufacturer for further advice.

As a general rule of thumb when looking to purchase a replacement printer, you might consider the cost of consumables prior to deciding which brand to buy.

REPAIR and SERVICE

PCWorkspace works largely in a mobile capacity - Customers who bring base units can nonetheless benefit from a speedy analysis and repair, and we will of course collect and return systems…

Important

It may be deemed necessary in some cases, when on the workbench, to fully service a PC or Laptop, conceivably re-install the operating system for any number of possible reasons. While this might not have been the original intention, it may nonetheless be considered in the client's best interest, particularly where it has been found that there are perhaps compounding or insurmountable software issues. Consequently, the client may themselves then need to reinstall peripherals and/or third-party software when the unit is returned.

Providing that the customer has a current Internet (ISP) contract, all units returned to the client are, with exception, fully configured, Internet and Internet Security ready. However, given in such cases, that a hard-drive may be repaired or cleaned, an estimated service fee will not include the reinstallation of third-party software, moreover PCWorkspace cannot be held responsible for the consequential loss of software installations that are not licensed, i.e. where the client does not have original support discs and appropriate licence or product key(s). It is the client's responsibility to ensure that original backup media and licenses are retained and available if required, and to ensure also that any product keys for software purchased online are recorded should they subsequently be needed.

Systems with no software, or a conceivable damaged recovery console, may instead simply be restored to the Windows licence adhered to the chassis or beneath the laptop, along with drivers and third-party components such as Adobe reader, flash, java etc. While there is little difference between an original Windows installation, some features on missing bespoke recovery discs, or add-ons originally streamlined with the now damaged recovery console, such as Microsoft Works and optical drive (recording) software, may not consequently be restored unless the client wishes to purchase replacement recovery discs, or a hard-drive partitioned with the original recovery console from the equipment manufacturer.

Where a full recovery is necessary, and the client requires data safeguarding and restoring, a surcharge may be appropriate if there are excessive volumes of data, e.g. music files. Moreover, in the event that a customer does not mention that there are high volumes of data to recover, we may simply opt to go ahead with works estimated less than £60.00 (including collect and return) without reporting back to the client.

STORAGE

An estimated maximum capacity table for hard-drive files is included here, however one should perhaps bear in mind that guidelines are for external back-up disks or partitions, and not necessarily for system drives.

Technically, only 15% of hard-drive free space is needed to maintain a hard-drive supporting Windows XP - nonetheless a system can only accommodate volumes of data in-keeping with the computer resource (the combined processor, memory and hard-disk free space). Consequently, many systems in reality may only perform well with little over 15% usage, let alone 15% of free space.

Personal files will ideally be diverted to a data partition, D:/ drive and preferably no data what-so-ever stored to the system C:/ drive.

STORAGE DIGITAL MP3 TRACKS DIGITAL PHOTOS DVD VIDEO
160Gb 40,000 45,500 80 Hours
250Gb 62,500 72,500 120 Hours
320Gb 80,000 91,000 160 Hours
500Gb 125,000 145,000 240 Hours

A recommended approximate partition for the system drive is included below, taking into consideration, updates, service packs and third-party software installations. Dedicated partitions may also be appropriate for devoted software installations such as PhotoShop. Any remaining hard-drive capacity can be partitioned and labelled (compartmented) to house data files diverted away from the system C:/ drive.

VIRUS / VIRUS CLEANING

£15.00 The cost of removing an infection is likely from £15.00, for example, £15.00 + (£7.50) for Security Updates and Service Packs, totalling £22.50, though this cannot be a fixed fee, and a full service may be advised.
£07.50 Conceivable time needed to process security updates also means that downloads may only be initiated and explained to the client on site, otherwise might require returning to the workshop.

Caution: It is important to maintain your Internet Security (Firewall/Anti-virus) software and not simply rely on automatic updates. If both your Internet and System (Windows) Security are maintained and up-to-date, your platform should be okay - resource depending.

From time to time however, the Trojan or Virus may install ahead of a software update or patch, and while it is possible that one may no longer detect a threat subsequently removed from a hard-drive, the damage may have been done, the PC nevertheless unstable given the impact that an intrusion can have on the operating system (OS).

Consequently, cleaning a platform may well prove the most economical option to restoring system files and the computer registry, doubly ensuring that the Internet Security has a) not expired, i.e. the subscription, b) that all security software components are up-to-date, and c) that the newly installed OS also includes the latest Service Packs and Updates.

Miscellaneous threats include applications that do not fit into other categories, or they fall into multiple categories. These typically include some form of potentially abhorrent functionality that may pose privacy or security risks.

A Rogue Security Program is software that claims to scan and detect Malware or other problems on the computer, but attempts to trick users into purchasing the program by presenting the user with intrusive, deceptive warnings and/or false, misleading scan results. Such programs may use aggressive, deceptive advertising likely installed without notice or consent, often through exploits (flaws).

WIRELESS

Internet is reinstated as standard, and a pre-configured WiFi connection qualifies for re-configuration free of charge where a system has been returned to a client following repair or upgrade. Otherwise, Broadband and Wireless (WiFi) services are fixed at £30.00 (£25.00 OAP (includes complimentary maintenance)).

Typically, a wireless broadband modem/router provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) will be secured by default, and therefore the Internet cannot generally be accessed through the device other than by the client who is provided with a wireless modem/router specific WEP or WPA key to unlock the encryption.

Those with an unsecured wireless network have conceivably purchased a third-party modem/wireless router, one that has not been provided by their ISP, which has possibly not then been configured correctly, if at all.

Likely because the third-party device is not supported by their broadband provider and/or one is simply unaware that it is unsecured, unmindful that it will not have a unique SSID and, unless it is configured to the broadband profile, their Internet may be accessed (in breach of the law) by anyone in the immediate area that has a system fitted with a wireless adapter.
